Angry teachers at the struggling Madeley Court School in Telford went on strike today in protest against possible job cuts.
Around 18 banner-waving teachers at Madeley Court School were protesting at the school gates over fears a partnership with Thomas Telford School will mean job losses.
Members of union NASUWT claim the partnership, which was introduced to improve the school, will mean a cut in teaching jobs.
Parents and pupils arriving at the school this morning were met by one-third of the teaching staff waving placards that read "no redundancies".
A school trip to an outdoor education centre in Arthog, Mid Wales, has been postponed because of the strike.
School head Vic Maher said the one-day strike had not affected lessons.
But NASUWT national executive member Brian Oakley said members were prepared to strike again.
He said today: "I believe the ball is in their court now and if they are not going to resolve it it will lead to further industrial action.
"Any proposals to stop the redundancies have got to come from them. Our position is clear and we are quite happy to sit down for constructive talks.
"We are very disappointed at having to strike but it is a last resort.
"It affects the education of the pupils and we were most reluctant to do it but we feel we have no alternative."
But Mr Maher said parents and pupils supported the changes made.
He added: "I have had a phenomenal response from both parents and pupils
"The strike unsettled the start of the day but the children are all getting their lessons as timetabled.
"We are in partnership with Thomas Telford school, if anyone thinks I am a puppet at this school they are mistaken. I am going to make it one of the best in Telford & Wrekin."
And Jemma Turner, from Ketley, a former pupil at the school, said: "Those teachers who are going on strike - I am ashamed of you.
"I just hope my two brothers and my sister, who attend Madeley Court, aren't the unlucky ones who'll miss out because of you."
Well said, Sweetheart!

(This is Jem)
Different versions got different stories. The Shrewsbury shroppie star only put the story on the 3/4th page, and it was really cut down. The one I got had the full story. Mum cut it out, so i'll probably bring it into college tomorrow. ;)March 24 2004, 13:00:46 UTC 8 years ago
